How to Make Cannabutter?
Cannabutter, or butter infused with weed, is a common and easy way to make edibles. You can find top quality buds at various weed stores in Washington D.C., and butter always works well for it. This is because butter tastes good. It is versatile to use. It is also fat soluble, being an abundant source of fats. Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, binds only to fat molecules, which is why oils work well too.
Infusing cannabis takes a few hours. However, the process is very easy to do. In fact, it is so easy that even beginners will succeed with our recipe. Like all edibles, it is important to go slow and start low. Always try a little first, wait an hour or so for effects to kick in, and only ever eat more if you specifically want to get more stoned. A lot more stoned. Be warned.
Using Cannabutter to Make Edibles
- Decarboxylation
To get high, one must first convert tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, or THCA, into THC. This requires decarboxylation, a process that the U.S. National Library of Medicine says uses heat to activate the psychoactive properties of cannabis. Heat turns THCA into THC, which then makes you stoned. When you flame a joint or bowl, that heat is what decarboxylates your weed. For cannabutter, you use an oven.
Failure to decarboxylate properly will result in edibles having little to no expected effects. No high. No buzz. No adventure. Nothing. While some recipes do call for throwing bud into hot butter, it is not really the way of doing it. Decarboxylating first will make your edibles more potent, more effective. Further, the less time you spend soaking buds, the better your final butter will taste.
- Dosing
It is difficult to dose homemade edibles accurately. This is important to remember, and the best reason for starting slow and low. It is almost impossible to guarantee homogeneity or potency of any batch of edibles, especially when made at home without expensive equipment. Fortunately, there are dosing charts online that you can use as a guide to start somewhere. Play a little. Experiment.
Making Cannabutter
It does not cost much to make cannabutter. It offers a cheap way to get stoned at home. Besides the obvious need for time and patience, you only need a few items to make it. Nothing fancy, nothing hard to get. However, it is crucial that you keep an eye on your butter when cooking. It burns easily, very quickly, and this is the fastest, perhaps only way to really ruin it.
What You Need
- Parchment Paper
- Baking Sheet
- Cheesecloth or Mesh Strainer
- Slow Cooker, Double-Boiler, Stock Pot, or Saucepan
- Container
- Cannabis Grinder, optional
- Oven
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Ground Weed, around 10 grams, decarboxylated
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, or 2 Sticks
Method
- Preheat oven to 245 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Place parchment paper onto baking sheet, add loose buds, and heat for around 40 minutes, mixing gently every 15 minutes or so.
- Grind weed into a fine consistency using a grinder or your hands. Not too fine, not powdered.
- On low heat, melt butter in chosen pot.
- Add water to prevent scorching.
- Once melted, add the weed.
- Simmer on very, very low heat for two or three hours, stirring occasionally. Do not allow it to come to a boil.
- Strain the mixture through cheesecloth or mesh strainer. Place over a jar and pour mixture through it. Throw the plant material out and do not squeeze the butter through. It will add chlorophyll to your butter and ruin its taste.
- Put your butter in the fridge, ideally overnight, and allow it to solidify before using. Drain off any excess water.
